Au Pair Visa and Regulations in America (USA)
Au Pair Visa & Regulations in America (USA)
Young people from almost all countries can become an au pair in the USA, except from those countries which have no diplomatic relations with the USA.
Travel costs and other costs: The travel costs will be paid by the agency to which the host family makes payments for this purpose. The au pair also pays a fee to the agency plus a deposit at some agencies which will be returned at the end of the year. If the au pair leaves before the stipulated time, he/she has to bear the costs for the flight back to his/her home country and will not be returned the deposit.
Pocket money: 139 USD per week (families pay 245 USD per week)
Duration of stay: The duration of stay is usually 12 months. A 13th month is normally added to travel through the country. There are agencies which offer a Summer Au Pair stay of three months during the US American summer holidays. For further information, please ask your agency.
Preconditions: The au pair needs a certificate of health, a certificate of good conduct, a driver's license and experiece in the field of child care.
Age: The au pair should be 18 to 26 years old.
Working hours: The au pair works up to 45 hours per week and not more than 10 hours per day.
Holidays / weekends: The au pair is entitled to 1 1/2 days off per week and one weekend off per month (beginning Friday evening and ending Monday morning). During a stay of 12 months, the au pair gets 2 weeks (10 working days) of paid holiday.
Courses during the stay: The au pair must attend eight training hours on child safety and 24 hours of training on child development before going to the host family. Furthermore, the au pair must take part in further education courses and the family must pay up to $500 per year for this purpose. Some agencies offer language courses to the au pair which might also be mandatory.
Educational background: The au pair must have good knowledge of the English language and needs a high school diploma or a corresponding education. If the au pair is required to look after a child under the age of two, the au pair has to demonstrate that she has at least 200 hours of child care experience with infant children of that age group. If the au pair is required to care for a child younger than 3 months, it is mandatory that a parent or other adult is present during that time. For further information, please contact the six licenced au pair agencies.
Insurance: The host family must pay a health insurance for the au pair. It is advisable that the au pair effects an accident insurance and a third party insurance for the stay.
Visa: To become a legal au pair in the USA you need to have a J1-Visa. You can only apply for this J1-Visa if you go through one of the six federally designated au pair agencies. From these agencies you can get a DS-2019 form with which you can apply for a visa. To get further information, please contact the proper agencies.
We recommend that you search and find your au pair / host family on Aupair World and then use the services of one of the six licenced agencies in the US to apply for a J1-visa.

I'm new to this and I'm really interested to be an Aupair.I have been contacted by one family in New Jersey, but the problem is that she needs me there for at least 6 months but she needs me to get at tourist visa. But as far as I'm concern, tourist visa can only allow me to stay for a max time of 2 months.I was thinking more of a working visa but then she says I should get a tourist visa. How do I go about this?I'm really confuse.Should I apply for a tourist visa like she told me to?Really hope I could get help and more information for you all. Thanks

Don't work illegally. ALL au pairs need J1 visas to be an au pair in the US. The family MUST join an agency to apply for this visa and this costs a lot of money/ However, this way you know you're protected, you won't be black-listed when you go home plus let's put it this way, if the family cannot afford an agency, they'll probably see you as very cheap help which they can take advantage off instead of a working abroad experience.

I know that the UK does not allow American Aupairs but is it possible to invite an American (student) to stay with us and pay them pocket money (in return for some help around the house?)
Can they do this on a visitors visa (it's only for a couple of months) or must they get a working visa?
Thanks

America doesn't allow you to sponsor anybody for a working visa. Those are hard to get even for big companies nowadays. They have so many applications that they started a lottery to see which application to process. The number of H! is set to 65,000 each year ant they get taken in the first couple of hours of the first day they open, which is only once a year.
So, no way you can do something with that.
There are 2 more options, though. The first one is a J-1 visa. This option is expensive, because you have to go thru an agency and usually agencies fees for the visa are around $6000-7000. The visa is for one year and renewable for one more year.
If it is only for a couple of months, the tourist visa is the best option. For countries who don't require a visa to get to the US (like Europe), the visa waiver allow somone to be in the US for up to 3 months. There are restriction to the tourist entry, though. The 3 months max are per year. So, no re-entry for one year once you leave. Then, they might not give you a stamp for 3 months, but only for 1 or 2. This is at discretion of the INS officer at the airport. (Do not get in from San Francisco, they tend to deny entrance). Of course with a tourist visa or waiver, nobody is allow to work or study. Only visiting. Accepting money is not a legal option. Then, you do what you want.
The tourist visa B-2 allows youto stay 6 months or so.
Hope I could help.

Hi there, at the moment i'm just looking around and trying to find out all about taking in an Au Pair. What is a reasonable fee to pay for about 20 hours a week ?, this is including light housework. And does anybody know what the cost of insurance is ?...in the Netherlands that is....
I just got a new job position in the company i'm working for, in which i should be able to work more flexible hours...being a single parent, i thought taking in an Au Pair could be a solution since daycares close at six p.m.
Anyway, please let me know all the information you have....Thanks.

I think families in London usually pay around 55-80pounds, or in Dublin around 80-100, but that can of course be very different and it depends on how hard the work is, how many hours a week, weekends, evenings, etc. Of course families pay more if there is a lot of ironing for example.
I think you should ask any au pair agency that, because I am not sure about the Nederlands...
Take care and good luck,
Spela

I forgot to mention, that this is only for approx 25 hours a week. I dont even think au pairs should work much more that...I think 40 is the limit, and that is what we call au pair plus. If I am not mistaken.

$140 USD to start but depending on their experience and the work they do I have paid as much as $300 USD per week.
Another way I pay is by the hour if it is less than 20 hours I pay $10 per hour.
I pay for health insurance and it is usually $600 per year.
I pay for their airfare round trip if 6 months and 2 round trips if more than 12 month stay.

In the Netherlands, its around 300 euros a month. which is like 70 euros a week. That I think is fair. I am working there now and it is enough. There is an insurance company that covers au pairs I dont know the name, but its not much a month. Also if they are not from the EU they will need a residincy permit which costs about 430 euros and they cannot renew it. It is good for only a year. If you have any more questions email me.'
Sincerely,
Brittany

Hello, in the Netherlands , an au pair can legally work for 30 hours a week. For this, she gets 300 euros a month (minimum) - 340 euro(she will get taxed for anything more than this). Most families pay for air fare or at least half. My host family bought me an au pair insurance by ISIS , I tihnk it's about 480 euro a year. Good luck in finding an au pair!

Well, I'm a 21 year old, white, brazilian, psychology student girl, who would love to work as an au pair but don't have the money to travel to where I'm needed.
So, I need a family who's willing to pay for my plane ticket.
I'm warm hearted, friendly and understanding.
I'm willing to be available for the kids whenever they need. Not only on the work hours. If they want just sit and play with their little cars and dolls I'm all up for it.
I don't do housework, unless it's light housework (as putting the washing on the machine, putting the toys away and such).
I love children and babies. Also animals.
I don't mind babysitting at night as needed.
If someone is willing to take me as an au pair, it's gonna be my 1st experience.
I don't smoke and I don't drink.
I'm a former military school student (my dad's a colonel from the army), I studied tourism for 1 year and now I'm on my 3rd year of psychology.
I love meeting new people and new places so I think becoming an au pair would be a wonderful opportunity/experience for me.
If anyone is interested or have any questions just e-mail me.
I can start in january 2006 if needed. (I want to spend christmas and new years eve with my family).
I'd specially love to work in Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Greece, Australia, Estonia, UK and USA (esp. Hawaii).
But other places would be lovely too.
Thank you for your attention and I hope to hear from you soon!
Hugs,
Anele

it's definitely a scam. no uk families pay even half that much for an au pair. au pairs in the uk get 55 pounds for 25 hours. 45 hours is illegal by the way, but if you do work that, you should get around 100-150 pounds a week . definitely not US$700

Hello all,
I read a few of the complaints made against the families on the au pair sites and found complaints about people that I am firmilliar with.Theo Johnson, Larry Wilson and Seth Brooks (They are all the same people). They are on this site and on other au pair sites. Thiese emails are almost exactly the same and they both referred me to THEIR travelling agencies. They wanted me to pay the money into an account in Nigeria but I said that I would like to use my own agency and they told me if I don't use their agencies I would have to look for another family. They all claim to be American but can hardly speak a word of english. PLEASE BE AWARE!!!
This is the first e-mail that I got from Larry Wilson wich is almost the exact same as in another complaint.

This is what Seth Brooks sent me because I didn't want to use his travel agency called (BRITISHTICKETAGENT) How dumb can you get!!
Hello,
Thanks for the mail.Well,i will like to inform you that it is only through my ticket agent that you can use in coming over here ok.Once you know that you can not send the money to them in Lagos Nigeria then have a nice day and look for another family.Or you can simply make the funds transfered to them through Money Gramm ok.So i hope all is well and hope to read from you soon....
Cheers....
Mr Seth Brooks.....
I always ask the families to send me a letter of confirmation that I will have the job, this letter must have their signiture, like a contract. And a form of identification, you can use these if it is a scam and you want to sue them! The suppose to be travelling agency ask that you send money to an account abroad through WESTREN UNION MONEY TRANSFER because that is the only way they can collect money without being traced. I have a friend that works with visa's and things and she said that you never pay money into an account abroad, it should be a company account at the bank. I always use my own agency or they can pay the money for the travel documents and you just pay the money back. I always look up their addresses but most of the time they don't exist or another family lives there. One of them even cut out pictures out of a book to use as photo's, just my luck we were buying the same magazines. lol.
I hope that this bit of information helped someone and if anyone of the scammers are reading this, remember what goes around comes around. If there is any questions please do email me or if you know about other scammers I would like to know.
Take care and God bless

For example, on another site of au pair, i have been contacted by a dude who said he was an engineer and need me ASAP. Him, just like others told me to work with his TRAVELING AGENCY. The bloody scamers wanted from me 1150 GBP to "process your documents" real fast!

Nigerian Scams!

Hello! I just want to say that Ive been scammed by an agency that got through Aupairs JobMatch in touch with me sending me information of a family in London. They wrote in behalf of a such Ben Natalia and the family name was Pirlo. The agency that wrote is called Spiral Consultancy & CO. Be careful! I had to send some money supposedly to pay for the agencys service and was supposed to be for the UNICEF in Nigeria. But after I sent the money (around 350 euros) I lost all contact with them. This money was supposed to pay as well for a working visa.
Here are the data they sent me as the information on the Agency: Spiral Consultancy & and Co. Greenesfield Gateshead, NE8 2AY. Phone Number:+44-(0)703!
1821 814, +44-(0)700 5963 409 Fascimile: +44-(0)700 5963 046
If you have any contact with this just avoid it. They kept insisting me in sending more money but I didnt and its been since then that Ive had no longer contact.
If any of you know where I might denounce this and perhaps have some answers please let me know. This just happened last week. As well if amyone knows if through Aupair JobMatch theres someone in which we could rely to denounce this and perhaps have better care in whom accesses the site as customer.
Keep eyes wide open!
Sincerely,
Caty, MEXICO

it's a scam. YOU DO NOT NEED AN AGENCY TO GET YOUR PAPERS PROCESSED. Please don't pay any money to that person who emailed you.
No genuine family will make you pay in advance. You may sometimes have to pay for certain things at your local embassy but NEVER send money abroad and NEVER pay any money to any travel agency .

This is to all Families and Aupairs / Nannies,
You do not need to have any aagency to get a family.
In my opinion they are either scams or the families and you are being played.
If you need to know what you need, do your home work on the website and by this i do mean any travel agency but the main unbiases goverment websites who make the rules!!!!!
check out the goverment website on www.britishhighcommission.gov.uk and click your country to see what is required.
Do not get tricked!!!
Please report anything suspious i know i will

Hello all,
I read a few of the complaints made against the families on the au pair sites and found complaints about people that I am firmilliar with.Theo Johnson, Larry Wilson and Seth Brooks (They are all the same people).

If any of you has been contacted by a "screwing" familly, please report it, so that we can all be aware of him/her!
For example, on another site of au pair, i have been contacted by a dude who said he was an engineer and need me ASAP. Him, just like others told me to work with his TRAVELING AGENCY. The bloody scamers wanted from me 1150 GBP to "process your documents" real fast!
and i said :piss off mate, excuse my french :)!

Hi dears,
I get very similar offer (for 350pounds weekly) from family Sarah Sheringham, who is registered in the agency now. They also wanted me to contact an agency (mcdavistravels@yahoo.com) and when I contacted them I get a request for 500 pounds to pay for visas, work permit etc... :-)))))
Scam, definitely. The people from agency should verify such families... We wouldnt lost time.....
Good luck girs, guys and be aware!!!

Sincerely,
Caty, MEXICO
how will i know if the agency is true or not?

i just received an email from a scotland employer and he suggests a travel agency, he is willing to pay the other amount on the agency for the process of my papers, the payment is 1150 gbp but he said that i can only pay 100 gbp and the rest would be paid by him, the name of the agency is UK travel agency in 55 comb paddock,westbury-on-trym,bristol. i need to know if this agency is true, another question how will i know if an agency is legal or not? is there a list of legal agencies in UK? respond anyone?

it's a scam.

Brazilian Au-Pair, Brazil
Hi There!!
My name is Adriana Souza, I am from Rio de Janeiro / BRAZIL, I saw your add at the aupair website and I am very interest to be aupair for you.
Please send me more information about your family and what do you need and expect from a aupair. What city do you live ?
I have below answers from a usually question I think you and your family need to know.
Please if you accept to be aupair to your family can you send me a eletronic
ticket? Always the families do that because is too expensive to me. You can keep
one week for month from me to pay this ticket. I think is the better way.
They usually pay me a 200,00 euros week and some night off (to go to shcool) and sundays off (to me trip around / to visit museus, movies, to do something bymyself, etc)
I can stay 12 months or more. If you give me the chance to be part of your family, please let me know urgent - I am free already to trip any day in May.
Thanks - Adriana

Roman Illin
Dear friends,
In this short letter I wanna introduce myself detailed, tell you about my planes for my stay in your country.
My name is Roman Illin, I am 24, I come form Northern Ukraine. Last year I have graduated from the pedagogical university, where I studied German and English. After the graduating I wanted to begin studying in IT but unfortunately I didnt get an university place. So I decided to become aupair and to make a pause between 2 studies. Why did I decide in favor of aupairjob? While studying the first time after the fifth semester I interrupted studies and have already worked aupair in Germany. On the one hand it was a good rest and on the other hand a very good practice as educator and teacher, that was priceless for me.
Of course not everything was as perfect as I had imagined before. Sometimes I did mistakes, sometimes the demands of the family were to great. But despite it I have learned very much, what I wasnt able to learn theoretically. Every young man as father or mother tries to do his or her best to educate the kids in the right way. But without experience we do many mistakes. I hope, Ill be able to avoid those mistakes, I had done or the parents in my host family did, because for me it was a nice possibility and lesson to observe them.
Im a philologist and for me its very important to learn more languages. I speak German fluently and good English. Nowadays I learn French.
But most of all of course Im interested in culture, mentality, ideas, dreams. It could help me to improve my world inside. I wanna use all my knowledge in your childrens and yours favor and I hope that this way I could leave a part of me, of my culture and country by you and to learn a part of your in your family.
You are seeking an aupair and I hope to pass all your demands. Its not easy to tell about myself and the other people could do it better but Im sure, that we will spend the next year in harmony.
I have worked only with little children (5 month the goddaughter of my sister till 5 years three kids in the Family in Germany, also my nephews, the kids of my friends), but as teacher I also worked with elderly children.
The work around the house is not a problem for me, but i am not so good in preparing difficult meals.
I can look after the kds, help doing homeworks, bring them to bed, reads stories, play with them. If you need it, I can do light houseworks.
I love kids very much, am kind-hearted, nice, very open, humorous.
The circle of my interests is rather wide: programming, sci-fi, astronomy, football, languages and I would be glad, if I could have a possibility and means to arrange a part of my free time so meaningfully.
I think that was all. I tried to express myself shortened and hope I succeeded. I will impatient wait for a personal conversation.
Sincerely yours
Roman Illin

Questions to ask the Family

Questions to ask the Family
Being an AuPair will give you the chance to live with a family in a foreign country and appreciate their culture. Choosing the right family is going to be very important to you. Forgetting to ask a vital question could completely change your perception of the role.
We have compiled a list of questions to help you. Many of the questions have already been asked of the family when they completed their registration form at this site so you can get answers by viewing their profile. This is by no means an exhaustive list. If you have additional suggestions, we will be pleased to add them to the list. Please email us.
